Thursday I got up very early to pick up someone special from the airport! Chris came to visit for the last leg of my trip! I missed him very much and I am excited that he gets to explore the area with me! My main goal for Thursday was to keep Chris awake! He arrived at 8:30am in Scotland which would be 3:30am at home! Yikes! (I think I did a good job, we walked over ten miles Thursday!!)
We got a rental car for a few days so that we could drive up to Inverness and throughout the Scottish Highlands. We got a manual transmission, good thing Chris knows how to drive stick! It is so different driving on the different side of the road but what is most difficult is navigating the streets. In Columbia all of the streets are on a grid system but in Edinburgh streets just end. It took a while to find somewhere to park the car in Edinburgh and check in to the hotel. Once we got checked in we went and got some lunch at a really awesome whiskey restaurant. Chris tried a haggis and venison hamburger and he loved it! I still cannot bring myself to try haggis. Chris also tried an Oakwood Ale and I was finally reunited with Bulmers, yum!
After lunch we headed up to Edinburgh Castle. We both could not wait to see the castle. It was gorgeous. It was special to Chris because of the Stuart/Stewart tie and because the Citadel, Chris' alma matter, occasionally gets to play in the military tattoo hosted there.
For dinner Chris and I headed to the Hard Rock Caffe in Edinburgh. I know it is incredibly touristy but it is a tradition we accidentally started on our honeymoon! We had dessert at Ben's Cookies which Chris loved it!
What a wonderful first day together in Edinburgh!
