I ended up staying up all night Saturday night since we had to leave the dorms at 3:30am to make our way to Heathrow airport. It was fun spending time with classmates before we all went our separate ways. When we arrived at the airport nothing was open, not even the airline kiosks. At 5:00am everything began opening up and our journey home was officially beginning. I was of course unable to make it through security with out a good frisk. I do have ot give it to Heathrow Airport, their security is very tight. I really do appreciate their effort to keep everyone as safe as possible.
Our plan arrived on time and we were all able to board quickly. I was very thankful that I was able to receive a window seat! I was in loading group 3 so I was able to board the plane pretty quickly. I know that our plane was delayed for some reason but as soon as I hopped on the plane I fell asleep. I was actually able to sleep for four to five hours on the plane ride home which is quite unusual for me. Flying makes me very nervous so I usually do not sleep at all. After I could not sleep anymore I watched Divergent on the plane. I had been waiting to see this movie for a while. It was actually really good and I feel as if is stayed pretty true to the book series!
The tricky part was making my connecting flight. I only had a little over an hour to get through immigration, pick up my checked bag, go back through security, and find my terminal! Yikes! I was determined to make this flight! I raced off of the plane only to be greeted by a long line in Dulles at Customs. There was only ONE immigration officer for the US citizens. Luckily the line went fairly quickly and I was able to check my bag back in at rapid speed. I dashed to my terminal with a few minutes to spare before boarding. I used my large Vera Bradley duffle as my carry on which was great because it was so large BUT it was impossible to lug around the airport at a full sprint. I have a lovely bruise on my shoulder from it. My flight from Dulles to Columbia also had a brief delay but I tried going back to sleep. The flight was only a little over an hour.
It was wonderful to hop off the plane and see Chris waiting for me! It was so nice to be reunited with him. After collecting my bags we ventured to my parents house to have a delicious feast with my family. Right before I left my mom and brother left for a trip to France, Italy, and Spain. We were all able to catch up on our adventures and just spend some time together! My mom also made us a delicious italian meal complete with good wine, delicious pasta, and yummy bread! I of course cannot forget the delicious deserts.
Not long after dinner I quickly started faling asleep. I went to bed super early as the jet lag began to take over. It was so nice to sleep in my own bed and to be reunited with my cat, Bella. Bella must have missed me because she surprisingly slept beside me ALL night.
It has been strange to be back in a two bedroom apartment with more space then I know what to do with. Anyone who has been to Europe knows what I am talking about--the living spaces are tiny. It makes our apartment seem HUGE.
Although it was an exhausting trip I am glad that I was able to leave so early in the morning. Having an early flight helped avoid long lines at the airport and delayed flights.
